My Journey to Bonsai Hobby

Picking up the Bonsai hobby did not cross my mind though I love planting since the younger day. I have took up gardening as my CCA during 4 years in Secondary School

For long I appreciate the artistic presentation of the bonsai plants, but it seem a distance away from owning them. Main reasons being it seem costly to own one and having no how to start the hobby.

I chanced to join the Tanjong Pagar CC Bonsai Club back in 2007. Interestingly I only discovered the Bonsai group 3 years after participating at Ceramic Making class.

Under the guidance and leadership from Mr. Lee, our club chairman, members undergone a progressive and comprehensive training to learn the basic skill & knowledge on cultivating and maintaining the plants.

Basic knowledge includes:

1. Recognize the best presentable (front) view of the plant

2. Mesh & prepare of burnt-soil into different sizes

3. Watering

4. Pruning

5. Shaping of plant from raw (non-mature) material

6. Repotting

7. Use of fertilizer

8. Air-layer, technique in propagating Bonsai

9. Grafting, technique in propagating Bonsai

Members also having opportunity to participate in various activities & events include:

1. Visiting the nursery garden and bonsai groups in Singapore.

2. Talks & Workshops organized by the Club

3. Events organized by Community Centre

Would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Lee for his endless energy & passionate in setting up the group from zero; organizing the events and making the lesion interesting; his selfless of impacting knowledge & skill to the members.
